Normativa y legislación de la censura eclesiástica y estatal del cine en la España franquista y su aplicación a las películas traducidas del inglés

Abstract

[ES] El sistema de censura establecido en España durante el franquismo empezó a funcionar en el bando nacional en 1936, cuando la Guerra Civil española acababa de comenzar, y dio sus últimos coletazos en 1985, en plena etapa democrática. Este trabajo tiene como objetivo analizar la evolución de la normativa y la legislación de la censura eclesiástica y estatal del cine durante el franquismo, proporcionando ejemplos de su aplicación a las películas traducidas del inglés recopiladas en el Catálogo traceci (1951-1975). Para ello, se examina la normativa de la Iglesia católica en materia moral y la evolución de la legislación oficial publicada en el Boletín Oficial del Estado. Dicho análisis demuestra que, debido a la gran repercusión social del cine, tanto la Iglesia católica como el Estado establecieron estrictas medidas de control al cine en general y al cine traducido en particular. La Iglesia católica creó un sistema de calificación de películas de carácter consultivo, pero solo las juntas de censura y calificación tenían la potestad de emitir un veredicto. Nuestro análisis también pone de manifiesto cómo, mientras la calificación moral no sufrió variaciones, las medidas de control estatal se fueron adaptando a la cambiante situación sociopolítica del régimen, y cómo la influencia de la Iglesia católica disminuyó a partir de los años sesenta, a medida que España abría paulatinamente sus fronteras al exterior. Este trabajo contribuye a la generación de conocimiento sobre el funcionamiento de la censura del cine nacional y traducido durante la etapa franquista.

[EN] The censorship system established in Spain during the Franco regime began to operate on the Nationalist faction in 1936, when the Spanish Civil War had just begun, and gave its last throes in 1985, in the midst of democracy. The aim of this paper is to analyse the evolution of the regulations and legislation of ecclesiastical and state cinema censorship during the Franco regime, providing examples of its application to the films translated from English collected in the traceci (1951-1975) Catalogue. To this end, it examines the Catholic Church’s regulations on moral matters and the evolution of official legislation published in the Boletín Oficial del Estado (Official State Gazette). This analysis shows that, due to the great social impact of cinema, both the Catholic Church and the State established strict control measures over cinema in general and over translated films in particular. The Catholic Church created an advisory film rating system, but only the censorship and rating boards had the power to issue a verdict. Our analysis also shows how, while the moral rating remained unchanged, state control measures were adapted to the changing socio-political situation of the regime and how the influence of the Catholic Church diminished from the 1960s onwards, as Spain gradually opened its borders to the outside world. This work contributes to the generation of knowledge about the functioning of national and translated film censorship during the Franco regime.
