El gaitero (1896): costumbrismo leonés idealizado en el teatro por horas.

Abstract

[ES] Este artículo examina la zarzuela El gaitero (1896) como un ejemplo de la concepción mistificada de la cultura leonesa en el contexto del género chico del Madrid finisecular. Hay en esta obra representación de costumbres, trajes, música y arquitectura, que sirvieron de carta de presentación idealizada de la montaña leonesa para el público de la capital asistente al teatro por horas, pero que responde a una visión reduccionista del territorio llena de tópicos y estereotipos. Aunque existen numerosas zarzuelas regionalistas vinculadas con distintos lugares de la geografía española, el caso de El gaitero es algo raro y casi excepcional para León.

[EN] This paper examines the zarzuela El gaitero (1896) as an example of the mystified conception of Leonese culture in the context of the small-genre (género chico) in the turn-of-the-century Madrid. In this work there is a representation of customs, costumes, music and architecture, which served as an idealized overview of the mountains of León for the audience of the capital attending the theater by hours, but which responds to a reductionist vision of the territory, full of clichés and stereotypes. Although there are many regionalist zarzuelas linked to different parts of the Spanish geography, the case of El gaitero is something rare and almost exceptional for León.
