AB In this paper I should like to look at translation as a modellingactivity, in a double sense. First, translating can be considered asconstructing a 'model' of a source text. This allows us to explore towhat extent the concepts of model theory might be applicable totranslation and what kind of insight, if any, might be derived from suchan exercise. Secondly, inasmuch as translating involves textualproduction in a social and cultural environment, we may inquire intothe norms which govern this process and the place and function ofdiscursive models and prototypes in relation to norms
