AB We described an extension of the knowndistribution range of the Cantabrian Capercaillie Tetraourogallus cantabricus into an atypical area and habitat forthe species. Nine Capercaillie leks and 14 cocks wereregistered in Mediterranean Quercus pyrenaica forests inan area of 1,500 km2, of which 4,500 forest hectares weresurveyed. At present, this population represents both thesouthern-most distribution for Capercaillie and the onlyone inhabiting Mediterranean Q. pyrenaica forests, whatsuggests a wider adaptation of this (sub)species than previouslythought. This population and its habitat need to bebetter studied, as well as to be considered in conservationplanning for Cantabrian Capercaillie
