Due to the lack of regulationof the dietary supplement industry, an abundance of supplementproducts of dubious value, content, and qualityare now available around the world. Many supplementproducts contain substances that are prohibited in sportor that have been associated with significant morbidityand mortality. For athletes, lack of knowledge or misinformationhas been established despite numerous sourcesof information being available, and the reasons for, andimplications of, unsupervised and unrestricted supplementuse require further attention. In addition to thenecessity of an appropriate regulation of dietary supplements, nutritional education and scientifically sound guidancefor athletes is required. Intervention and preventionefforts should be particularly targeted to adolescents.
