RT info:eu-repo/semantics/bookPart T1 Discourse and pragmatics. A cognitive perspective A1 Otal Campo, José Luis A2 Otros K1 Lenguas AB This paper is concerned with the connections between semantics, pragmatics, and discourse. The underlying assumption for this enterpriseis the belief that an explanatorily adequate account of discourseprocesses cannot be independent of semantics and pragmatics. The paperadopts a maximalist view of semantics in which the meaning ofsentences is seen as a result of complex patterns of interaction betweendifferent cognitive models (Lakoff, 1987). These include propositionalmodels, metaphor, metonymy, and image-schemas. The maximalistapproach to semantics is combined with a broad view of inferentialpragmatics according to which meaning derivation is regulatedby the presumption of optimal relevance, i.e. the speaker's presumeddesire to achieve the maximum number of meaning effects for theleast processing effort (Sperber and Wilson 1995). Cognitive modeltheory attempts to capture all the richness of semantic characterisations. This endows the theory with a huge potential to account for inferentialactivity and the ability of people to create conceptually connectedtexts. Inferential pragmatics contains all the criteria necessaryto explain how semantic descriptions are used strategically to createtext. Text is the result of adequate balancing explicit and implicit informationon the basis of relevance. This is done through what wemay call cued inferencing, i.e. making inferences on the basis ofprompts provided by linguistic expressions (usually underspecifiedsemantic representations) in connection to a context.
