RT info:eu-repo/semantics/bookPart T1 A corpus-based contrastive study of mental verbs A1 Verdaguer, Isabel A2 Otros K1 Lengua inglesa K1 Traducción e interpretación K1 Verbo (Gramática) AB In contrastive linguistics, the development of bilingual and multilingualcorpora have provided new empirical data and has allowed linguiststo focus attention on the syntagmatic axis and on the analysis ofword co-occurrence patterns. Corpus linguistics has given new emphasisto the importance of the context in word meaning. When syntagmaticassociations are taken into consideration together with paradigmaticones, a finer-grained linguistic analysis and new insights intothe comparison of languages can be obtained. The study presentedhere, in line with the current trend towards lexically oriented theories, approaches the interrelation between grammar and lexis, taking intoaccount the interdependence between lexical choice and contextualpatterns. The meaning of polysemous verbs is clearly related to theircomplementation patterns (Levin 1993, Poch and Verdaguer 1996,Faber and Mairal 1999) and the interface between syntax andsemantics allows a coherent and systematic account of the differencesin word meaning.
