The humanist interest in textual analysisand love of the world of antiquity contributed to Ximénez de Cisneros'sspirit of reform with the technical means and intellectual backgroundneeded to counter the widespread confusion caused by the deterioratedstate of manuscripts, copyist's errors and variant readings. Inspired by theexample of Origen nearly thirteen centuries earlier, Ximénez de Cisnerosfinanced the first printed polyglot Bible, a project welcomed by theflourishing humanist community in Spain. But the established theologicalcommunity, especially that of Salamanca and Valladolid, questioned andridiculed the project from its beginnings.
