La segunda opción: mujeres en los claustros quiteños del siglo XVII

Abstract

[ES] El siglo xvii supuso el fin del auge de las fundaciones femeninas en los territorios de la Audiencia de Quito. Al mismo tiempo fue un momento de consolidación de las mismas, tanto en lo material como en lo espiritual. Fue un periodo problemático por la abundancia de mujeres en los claustros y la relajación por la carencia de vocación de muchas de ellas, que llegaban allí como “la segunda opción” en su vida. Al mismo tiempo la vida del exterior se filtraba en los monasterios, dando lugar a problemas de jurisdicción entre los obispos y el clero regular, enfrentamientos y transgresiones de la regla. Junto a esto también se desarrollaban milagros y hechos maravillosos, que tenían como intermediarias a monjas con una vida de mortificación y sacrificio, a las que se les abría el camino a la santidad como representantes de un avance del criollismo, que quedaba reflejado en sus obras o en sus hagiografías. A la postre, se trataba de un mundo femenino, sometido a las imposiciones masculinas, que, en último término, definían la vida de aquellas mujeres y las hacían depender de sus propios intereses.

[EN] The 17th century saw the end of the boom in the foundation of cloisters within the territories under the ‘Audiencia de Quito’. It was also a period when the said cloisters were consolidated, both materially and spiritually. It was a time of many problems due to the high numbers of cloistered women and of the relaxation in the rules because of a lack of vocation in many of the women, who came to the convents as ‘a second choice’ in life. At the same time, the life outside filtered in, giving rise to jurisdictional problems between the bishops and the regular clergy, conflicts and violations of the rule. In addition, there were also miracles and miraculous events that involved the nuns as intermediaries, through their lives of mortification and sacrifice; thus opening up for them the path to sanctity, representing a step forward for creoles; something that was reflected in their literary works and hagiography. In short, it was a feminine world subject to masculine impositions that, ultimately, defined the lives of these women and meant that they were dependent upon their own interests.
