Tigre celta, crisis y prosperidad financiera. Irlanda, beneficiario de post-Brexit en la Unión Europea

Abstract

[ES] Irlanda es una de las economías más prósperas de Europa y ha mostrado en los últimos años, unas cifras de crecimiento y de recuperación postpandemia superiores al resto de los países de la Unión Europea, pero no siempre fue así. En este trabajo se abordará la historia reciente de Irlanda desde una perspectiva económica, comenzando con el episodio más trágico en su historia, como lo fue la gran hambruna, el desempeño económico del país en los años posteriores a su independencia del Reino Unido, las causas detrás del crecimiento económico del país en los años 90, denominado comúnmente como el “Tigre Celta” y el ocaso del mismo, ahondando en las causas, desarrollo y consecuencias de la crisis financiera de 2008. Por último, se analizará la situación actual de Irlanda y las posibilidades que el referéndum del Brexit en 2016 brinda al país, así como la idoneidad y realidad de una posible reunificación de la isla.

[EN] Ireland is one of the most prosperous economies in Europe and it has demonstrated in thelast years, levels of economic growth and recovery after the pandemic far stronger thanthe rest of the countries of the European Union but it has never been always li ke this. Inthis paper the recent history of Ireland trough an economic perspective will be analysed,beginning with the most tragic episode in its history as it was the great famine, theeconomic performance of the country in the years after the independe nce from the UnitedKingdom, the reasons behind the economic growth of the 90s, referred commonly as the“Celtic Tiger” and the downfall of it, delving in the causes, development andconsequences of the financial crisis of 2008. Finally, the current situat ion in Ireland willbe analysed and the possibilities the Brexit referendum of 2016 brings to the country, alsothe suitability and reality of a possible reunification of the island.
