Over the last few decades, plasmonic biosensors have attracted the interest of the biomedical field due to their simplicity and functionality. The optical properties of plasmonic materials have enabled the design of biosensing devices capable of detecting a broad range of analytes from nucleic acids and proteins to virus and bacteria in real biological samples. However, the feasibility of plasmonic biosensors as point of care tools not only relies on the optimization of plasmonic substrates but also on the integration of surface chemistry and microfluidics in miniaturized platforms. This work compiles the fundamentals of plasmonic biosensing strategies for achieving the ultrasensitive detection of the target analyte at the point of patient care.
